Duties
The Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) is a registered professional nurse, responsible for maintaining safe patient care by providing leadership and support to the unit staff, supervising clinical, administrative, and bed placement functions. The NOD has delegated authority for the Associate Director, Patient Care Services, for nursing decisions regarding workload, assignment of staff, management of clinical, administrative, personnel issues during non-administrative hours. The NODs are responsible for staffing decisions, addressing nursing concerns, practice issues, patient and family issues, clinical emergencies, interdepartmental communication, equipment and/or supply procurement, etc. The NODs are responsible for reviewing all prospective admissions against InterQual admission criteria and assist with ensuring the admission process is complete and timely, including all interward transfers, working collaboratively with the Medical and Administrative Officer of the Day (MOD, AOD). The NODs act as liaisons among various patient areas, Utilization Review, Outpatient Clinics, Care in the Community, and the Charge Nurses of the inpatient Units, MOD, AOD, for the purposes of providing comprehensive care to Veterans as safely and efficiently as possible. The NOD provides coaching and counselling to the nursing staff to resolve problems both with conduct or clinical issues. The NOD is responsible to evaluate and meet staffing needs and approve overtime accordingly. The NOD works closely with the Nurse Managers to ensure quality care for Veterans and to provide input into performance and conduct of staff.
