Registered Nurse Navigator - Medical Oncology Clinic - RN Hybrid

About the position

The RN Oncology Navigator is accountable for the coordination and continuity of services for patients receiving multi-modality cancer treatments. The RN Oncology Navigator works within a multidisciplinary team to manage and coordinate all aspects of care for a defined population of patients. They assess and plan, in collaboration with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary healthcare team members to meet the cancer care needs of the patient spanning the continuum of care. This may include activities such as coordinating appointments between specialties, regions or sites, acting as a liaison for patients and their families, providing patient education and assessing barriers to patient care. Provides direction to other allied health staff as applicable. Care is provided in a holistic, patient-centered approach with an emphasis on assisting patients to seek an appropriate level of service when needed and reducing the overall cost of care. The RN Oncology Navigator will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for an assigned population of patients. Promotes ethical decision making and advocacy for patients. The RN Oncology Navigator will help to enhance patients’ knowledge of their treatment plan and diagnosis. The RN Oncology Navigator may also promote shared decision making and collaboration amongst the patient, caregivers, and care team. The RN Oncology Navigator interacts with research professionals for awareness and promotion of research trial opportunities. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The American Nurses Association (ANA) Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, the Oncology Nursing Society, Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators competencies and guidelines provide the basis for oncology practice.

Responsibilities
• Coordinate and ensure continuity of services for patients receiving multi-modality cancer treatments.
• Manage and coordinate all aspects of care for a defined patient population within a multidisciplinary team.
• Assess and plan patient care in collaboration with the patient, family, and healthcare team.
• Coordinate appointments between specialties, regions, or sites.
• Act as a liaison for patients and their families.
• Provide patient education.
• Assess barriers to patient care.
• Provide direction to other allied health staff.
• Assist patients in seeking appropriate levels of service and reducing the overall cost of care.
• Plan, implement, evaluate, and communicate all phases of nursing care for an assigned patient population.
• Promote ethical decision-making and advocacy for patients.
• Enhance patients' knowledge of their treatment plan and diagnosis.
• Promote shared decision-making and collaboration among the patient, caregivers, and care team.
• Interact with research professionals for awareness and promotion of research trial opportunities.

Requirements
• Graduate of a baccalaureate Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program.
• Minimum 2 years of clinical experience required.
• Demonstrated leadership skills required.
• Effective communication skills required.
• Excellent critical thinking skills required.
• Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, and weekends.
• Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting is required.
• Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
• Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency (Arizona).
• BSN required.

Nice-to-haves
• Oncology experience and knowledge of disease population characteristics and desired outcomes preferred.
• Oncology Nursing certification preferred (required within two years of hire).
• Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
• Some remote work possible after orientation.
