Radiation Oncology Dosimetrist, Proton Center
About the position The Staff Dosimetrist at the Maryland Proton Treatment Center is responsible for providing comprehensive treatment planning for patients undergoing radiation therapy. This role involves calculating computerized isodose plans, collaborating with medical professionals to optimize treatment plans, and ensuring patient safety through meticulous verification and quality assurance processes. The position requires a strong foundation in physics and dosimetry principles, as well as effective communication skills to work within a multidisciplinary team. Responsibilities • Computes dose distributions and generates isodose curves for external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy. • Consults with Radiation Oncologists, Physicists, and Senior Dosimetrists to generate optimal treatment plans. • Incorporates anatomical information from various imaging modalities to minimize dose to normal structures and maximize dose to treatment targets. • Calculates treatment machine settings and documents calculations in therapy charts. • Performs verification checks and applies quality assurance procedures to ensure accuracy of dose calculations. • Evaluates patient charts to ensure treatment plans reflect prescriptions and documentation is complete. • Reports dose errors and changes in treatment parameters to physicist and physician. • Assists in complex simulation and fabrication of custom treatment devices. • Designs and fabricates shields, immobilization devices, and other treatment aids. • Orders radioactive sources for brachytherapy procedures and prepares them accordingly. • Assists physicist in QA checks of brachytherapy devices. • Generates treatment plans under the direction of a Physicist or Radiation Oncologist. • Performs patient and facility radiation surveys. Requirements • Board Eligible for Medical Dosimetry Certification (MDCB) with certification required within 2 years of hire. • Bachelor of Science degree in Physics or related fields plus training in radiation dosimetry, or graduation from an AAMD accredited dosimetry training program. • CPR Certification for Health Care Professionals. • General knowledge of anatomy and physiology. • Understanding of physics and dosimetry principles of external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy. • Ability to operate radiation therapy equipment including linear accelerators and simulators. • Knowledge of radiation safety policies and procedures.
