Platform Principal Engineer
Overview:
ViaPath is seeking a Principal-level Platform Engineer to design, build, and operate the core infrastructure and developer platforms that power our products. This role is highly hands-on and technical, with ownership across Kubernetes platforms, CI/CD pipelines, automation, observability, and reliability in a hybrid environment spanning public cloud and on-premises data centers. You will serve as a technical leader, partnering closely with application engineering, security, data, and operations teams to improve scalability, reliability, and developer productivity. This is a remote based position based in West Virginia.
Responsibilities:
Architect, build, and operate Kubernetes platforms at scale, including:AWS EKSRancher RKE2 / on-prem KubernetesMulti-cluster, multi-environment deploymentsOwn and evolve CI/CD platforms, with a strong emphasis on GitLab CI, supporting build, test, security scanning, and deployment pipelinesDesign and implement Infrastructure-as-Code using tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, and HelmDrive platform automation initiatives that reduce operational toil and improve developer velocityDesign, implement, and operate observability platforms, including metrics, logging, and alertingDefine and manage SLIs, SLOs, and SLAs for production systemsSupport and optimize hybrid cloud architectures, balancing workloads across cloud and private data centersPartner with security teams on secrets management, identity and access controls, and CI/CD supply-chain securityTroubleshoot complex production issues across Kubernetes, networking, storage, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructureAct as a technical leader and mentor for other Platform, SRE, and DevOps engineersContribute to long-term platform strategy, reliability improvements, and cost governance
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent practical experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree10+ years of hands-on experience with Linux-based systems in production environments, including system administration, troubleshooting, and performance analysis7+ years of experience designing and operating cloud infrastructure, with deep expertise in AWS, including EKS, IAM, networking, and core compute services5+ years of hands-on experience operating Kubernetes in production, including multi-cluster and multi-environment deployments5+ years of experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, with strong preference for GitLab CIStrong experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform, Terragrunt, CloudFormation, and/or AnsibleProven experience supporting hybrid environments, including both public cloud and on-premises infrastructureStrong understanding of networking fundamentals, including VPCs, routing, DNS, load balancing, TLS, and ingress/egressExperience designing and operating observability and monitoring systems, including metrics, logging, and alertingProficiency with containerization technologies such as Docker and HelmStrong scripting and automation skills (e.g., Bash, Python, Go, or equivalent)Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues across multiple layers of the stackExcellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering, security, and operations teamsPreferred QualificationsAdvanced degree in Computer Science or a related fieldBackground in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) or large-scale production operationsExperience operating Rancher RKE2 or other on-prem Kubernetes distributionsExperience supporting regulated, compliance-driven, or high-availability environmentsExperience supporting data platforms, streaming systems, or AI/ML workloads on KubernetesPrior experience in a Principal, Staff, or technical leadership roleWhat Success Looks LikeKubernetes platforms are stable, scalable, secure, and observable across cloud and on-prem environmentsCI/CD pipelines are reliable, fast, and easy for application teams to adoptInfrastructure changes are automated, repeatable, and auditableDevelopers spend less time fighting infrastructure and more time delivering featuresThe platform is viewed as an accelerator for engineering teams, not a bottleneck
