As a Library Shelver, you will play a vital role in maintaining the organization and accessibility of our library's collection, ensuring that materials are accurately shelved, and providing support to library staff as needed. This is an excellent opportunity for those who are passionate about libraries, customer service, and working in a dynamic environment.Key ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be responsible for a range of tasks, including:• Shelving books, periodicals, multimedia, and other materials in an efficient and accurate manner• Retrieving items from shelves and routing them for additional processing• Demonstrating knowledge of shelving protocols across different library sections• Conducting regular shelf-reading to ensure that all materials are properly organized, in good condition, and correctly placed on the shelves• Retrieving and sorting returned materials, placing them in the appropriate locations for reshelving, and assisting in checking returned items for damage and completeness• Assisting in setting up and maintaining library displays, ensuring that promotional materials and signage are neat and up-to-date• Providing basic directional assistance to patrons, such as guiding them to specific sections of the library or locating specific materials• Helping maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the library, including tidying up shelves, rearranging materials, and ensuring that aisles and public areas are free of obstructions• Assisting with special library projects or events as needed, such as inventory management, program setup, or other tasks assigned by the supervisor• Working collaboratively with other library staff to ensure the smooth operation of daily activities and the overall success of the libraryEssential QualificationsTo be considered for this role, you must:• Possess a high school diploma or GED and one or more years of customer service-related work experience• Have knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:• Knowledge of and ability to use Internet search engines, word processing software, email, online computer catalogs, ILS, and Windows operating systems• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers and staff throughout the library, as well as the general public within the organization• Ability to multitask many variable duties, requests, and responsibilities• Capacity to read, understand, and interpret manuals, policies, and procedures, rules, regulations, journals, newspapers, memos, letters, reports, and legal documentsPreferred QualificationsWhile not required, the following qualifications are preferred:• Knowledge of Polaris or other library software• Experience working in a library or similar environment• Ability to read, write, and speak another languagePhysical RequirementsThe Library Shelver role requires:• The ability to work using full bodily movement associated with bending, kneeling, stretching, reaching, pushing, and pulling associated with shelving books and pushing a book cart• The ability to occasionally use force to exert up to 40 pounds• The ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move objects, books, materials, etc. using up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objectsWork EnvironmentThe Library Shelver will work in a dynamic and fast-paced library environment, with frequent interactions with library staff, patrons, and the general public. The role requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a focus on providing excellent customer service and maintaining a clean and organized library environment.Supervision and GuidanceThe Library Shelver will work under the supervision of the Circulation and Assistant Circulation Manager, with guidance provided through the City Code, departmental policies, City operating practices and procedures, and other resources as applicable to specific projects assigned. Work performance will be reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences, and meetings.Public ContactThe Library Shelver will have regular and frequent contact with the general public, providing directional assistance, answering questions, and responding to customer inquiries in a professional and courteous manner.Selection Method and EligibilityThe selection method for this role will involve a structured oral interview, with candidates being assessed on their knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the position.
