POSITION : The Michigan Legal Help Program (MLH) is seeking a part-time Data Intern to assist in its Self-Help Center Program. The Data Intern will work with our Self-Help Center Team to prepare data collected by Self-Help Centers across Michigan. This position is 100% remote work, candidates must reside in Michigan. This position can be for the summer term, and/or during the school term. RESPONSIBILITIES: Data Preparation in Excel, including: Transforming raw data in Excel to usable format For example, if a SHC survey response is age "18 to 24" instead of "18-24", the responses need to be changed to "18-24" Searching, finding, and deleting test responses in Excel Confirming columns match survey questions Conducting quality assurance data checks in Excel, such as checking that start/end dates are within reporting period Add new, monthly data to spreadsheets Ongoing tasks (time permitting) including: Backing-up / archiving data files from SurveyMonkey to shared drive Quality assurance on reports and visuals Ad hoc data assignments, based on student’s interest, such as: Updating dashboards Literature and product review Best practices for data storage, data repository, etc. Strategy review to streamline dashboard syncs, reporting, etc. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM : The Michigan Legal Help Program (MLH) is a statewide program located in Ypsilanti. MLH works to democratize legal information through operating the nationally-recognized Michigan Legal Help website, as well as advocating for changes in court rules, forms and processes to bridge the justice gap for self-represented litigants. The Michigan Legal Help website contains plain language information on substantive and procedural law on legal areas with high rates of self-represented litigants. This includes know-your-rights articles, self-led interviews that help visitors fill out court forms, and step-by-step instructions that help walk visitors through the procedure of how they need to file and serve their forms, and the steps that follow. In 2022, the website had 5.3 million page views and nearly half a million court forms created through its interviews. MLH also helps libraries, courts and other community organizations open self-help centers to provide one-on-one assistance to members of their community who need assistance with their legal issues. This includes training existing staff to assist members of the public in identifying their legal issues and finding and using the appropriate resources on the site. MLH is part of Michigan Statewide Advocacy Services (MSAS), a non-profit law firm providing free legal services to individuals and families with low-income, Michigan’s immigrant communities, older adults and adults with disabilities through several statewide programs. QUALIFICATIONS : Applicants must be, at a minimum, a current undergraduate student with a working knowledge of Excel, Google Sheets, formulas, and pivot tables. We value analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as a demonstrated commitment to serving low-income individuals and underserved populations through lived or learned experience. Applicants must be detail-oriented, be able to work independently and meet all assigned deadlines. Applicants will need access to a reliable and secure internet connection. It is preferred that the candidate be able to dedicate 10 hours per week to this internship.
