Nuclear Facility Research Technician

Job Description Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Facility Research Technician to work on our IMCL Operations team. This position would work normally assigned 4x10 schedule at MFC with every Friday off, with the potential for alternate shifts and overtime pending future program and mission needs. The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at INL empowers the next generation of nuclear energy advances through hosting a unique combination of personnel, facilities, and infrastructure. MFC offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels and material from fuels design, development, and fabrication through to post-irradiation analysis. Responsibilities Skillfully operates and performs minor troubleshooting on facility equipment and systems. Facility equipment and systems may include overhead handling systems, remote handling and manipulating equipment, shielded casks, facility utilities, operational support systems, gloveboxes and testing equipment. Requires strong mechanical aptitude and hand-eye coordination to manipulate components and material utilizing remote handling systems. Also requires attention to detail to monitor gauges, dials, or other indicators to verify that equipment is working properly. Looks for opportunities to improve the team and work environment by fully demonstrating and integrating Human Performance Improvement (HPI) knowledge in all work processes. Contributes to an environment where use of HPI tools is the normal standard practice, expected and appreciated. Maintains accurate records of facility operation, equipment performance, production, treatment and experimental data in logbooks, log-sheets, or other data packages as required by facility programs and administrative procedures. Reviews and provides operational input to proposed procedures, procedural revisions, and proposed modifications to facility equipment/systems. Includes thinking creatively to ensure compliance while maintaining efficiency. Adapts and applies standard procedures for assigned tasks and known processes, such as experiments requiring minor modification and setting up and operating test equipment. Understands and performs material transfers within established limits, material at risk evaluations, criticality requirements, supports maintenance and engineering to perform equipment performance trending. Engages quickly, is flexible, adjustive and responsive to personnel from other disciplines to achieve mission outcomes. Track, package, transfer, receive, and store fissionable materials and hazardous material. Operate and identify needed maintenance on facility equipment and systems. Support researchers with loading/unloading/maintaining advanced research systems, remote handling equipment, shielded casks, facility utilities, operational support systems, gloveboxes, shielded hot cells, and testing equipment. Perform operations in accordance with approved procedures and DOE requirements. Complete and maintain qualifications in designated specialized areas of facility and process operations. Minimum Requirements Level 2: HS and 6 years relevant experience, AS and 2 years relevant experience, ESTEC grad and 0 years, Bachelors degree in applied science or technology and 0 years experience, US Navy as NEC (Nuclear), MM (Nuclear), EM (Nuclear) or ET (Nuclear). Level 3: HS and 8 years relevant experience, AS and 4 years relevant experience, ESTEC and 2 years of relevant experience, Bachelors degree in applied science or technology and 2 years of relevant experience, two years’ experience in US Navy as NEC (Nuclear), MM (Nuclear), EM (Nuclear) or ET (Nuclear) or Level II nuclear technician with demonstrated abilities/qualifications to perform level III work. Relevant experience working in an industrial or commercial environment where candidates can demonstrate a strong mechanical aptitude, strong hand-eye coordination, electrical, skilled trades, or scientific application. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship. Job Information The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($30.84/hr - $50.87/hr) / Level 3 ($36.08/hr - $59.52/hr). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials. Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills. TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and may work in confined spaces. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and operating a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required.
