Information & Responsibilities

SUMMARY

The Assistant Director is responsible for the administration of all aspects of School Partnerships and Teacher Training Programs. CAP is seeking to develop teacher training programs and this position will be integral to expanding its current programming, launching new programs, and envisioning this new aspect of CAP's mission. This position coordinates logistics for CAP programs in all artistic disciplines, including arts education and arts integration programs. This position reports to the Executive Director and develops strategic and sustainable partnerships and programming through close work with individual schools, school communities, and faculty, and other members of the CAP team.

The ideal candidate will have experience teaching K-12 students; leading professional development opportunities for teachers; managing employees; have experience with the needs and expectations of the diverse communities of Los Angeles county; establish and sustain positive relationships with school communities, arts organizations and providers throughout the County, understand the power of the arts to give agency and voice to those often not heard; be a deft and patient communicator; be able to work well both independently and collaboratively; and be genuinely enthusiastic about, and committed to, the mission of CalArts.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (included but are not limited to):

Program Administration (35%)

Works with Executive Director, school administrators, and classroom teachers to implement a high-quality arts program at designated sites. The assistant director will help create a professional development training program for student instructors, lead instructors, and classroom teachers.
Schedule, monitor, and oversee all aspects of teacher training programs, including recruitment of artist instructors and classroom teachers.
Oversees curriculum, syllabus, outline, and lesson plan development for Teacher Training Programs.
Assists in the hiring and training of Lead Instructors and Student Instructors.
Leads administrative aspects of assigned CAP programs and supports and manages Lead Instructors.
Coordinates all logistics, including scheduling programs, ordering equipment and supplies, arranging transportation, etc.
Conducts periodic site visits to evaluate program quality and effectiveness and completes individual program evaluations using assessment tools, and compiles and maintains an archive of applicable lesson plans.
Implements assessment of youth participant learning and instructor performance through assessment tools to measure the impact of Teacher Training Programs.
Reviews and gathers program impact data throughout the school year to evaluate programs and assess programmatic processes.
Creates a safe learning environment for CAP youth participants and student instructors. Abides by the rules, regulations, policies, and directives of CalArts and CAP as they now exist or as may be adopted by CalArts and/or CAP during the appointment period. Ensures that instructors follow all CAP Policies & Procedures at CAP Program Sites.
Completes data entry and ensures timely updating of program and partner information, and participant records in CAP databases, including program curricula, lesson plans, contact information and attendance records.
Works with CAP Executive Director to develop individual program budgets on a yearly basis and works with the CAP Finance Manager to implement and monitor the budget.
Provides timely information about assigned programs and works closely with Executive Director on all aspects of fundraising for CAP programs, including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
Works closely with the Executive Director on the implementation of program evaluations.
Works closely with the Executive Director on all aspects of communications about assigned programs through social media, print publications, advertising, press releases, email, publications, and websites.
Documents program activities through video, photography, interviews, surveys, etc.
Provides classroom support as needed.
Program Development (25%)

Brainstorms, researches, and proposes with CAP staff the creation of innovative, new programming, and any other new ideas that support and enhance CAP's mission.
Designs special projects and programs utilizing information gleaned from programmatic assessments.
Relies on arts education textbooks, educational standards, and programmatic assessment rubrics to evaluate CAP's programmatic impact.
Develops study guides, instructor handbooks, how-to-videos, training and evaluation tools, and other educational materials in collaboration with staff, classroom teachers, and lead artist instructors.
Participates in national peer group meetings, conferences, and professional development trainings.
Keeps abreast of trends in higher education, arts education, adolescent development, and youth leadership development, community arts, and teacher training.
Instructor Supervision & Training (25%)

Provides discipline specific pedagogical training for classroom teachers and CalArts student instructors through quality CAP programming.
Works with CalArts lead instructors to recruit, interview, assign and train student instructors for each program.
Supervises CAP student instructors in collaboration with CalArts lead instructors.
Conducts assessments of student instructor performance and makes recommendations for improvements in teaching.
Verifies student instructor eligibility for employment.
Oversees student instructor lesson plan content and structure, and classroom management.
Maintains a high degree of confidentiality at all times on HR issues related to faculty and student status and performances, student and faculty grievances, and other program concerns.
Reviews and approves instructor timesheets.
Directly supervises volunteers and interns of assigned programs.
Plans and produces culmination events, film screenings, readings, and art exhibitions for programs in collaboration with classroom teachers and Lead Instructors.
Community Engagement (15%)

Cultivates and maintains positive relationships with schoolteachers, school administrators, community organization leaders and parents.
Researches and becomes familiar with the contributions and needs of the diverse communities of Los Angeles County.
Serves as first point of contact for partner administrators on program logistics.
Actively participates in community building and engagement with program partners.
Represents CalArts and the CAP program in public, including partner organizations, prospective students and their families.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience in creating, implementing, and monitoring budgets.
Knowledge of current California state educational standards, best practices in teaching, curriculum development, working with teachers, and regulations about working with minors.

EDUCATION

Master's Degree
EXPERIENCE

Three to five years at minimum of professional experience in working with classroom teachers, including arts integration programs. Experience at an institution of higher education highly preferred.
Two to five years teaching at the K-12 level.
Three to five years at a minimum of professional experience in coordinating arts education programs for youth, including arts integration programs.
Three years of experience supervising personnel.
Three years of creating and managing budgets.
Three years of experience in implementing program evaluations and student assessments, including data collection strategies, survey implementation, data analysis, and reporting.
Experience in student development and leadership theory in higher education.
Demonstrated commitment to social justice in education.
Knowledge of current research associated with arts education and K-12 curricula, key policies in K-12 education (NCLB, ESEA, Common Core, etc.) and the California State Visual and Performing Arts standards.
Spanish language proficiency (written and spoken) a plus.
