Landscape Designer / Architect (3-5 years experience)

Remote Full-time
Fully Remote: However, candidates based in Los Angeles or Santa Barbara will have opportunities for in-person meetings and involvement in Construction Administration

Company Overview: At studio pappaterra, we are dedicated to crafting richly botanical, sustainable, and firewise landscapes in Southern California (with current projects in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties). Founded by Elisa Read Pappaterra, an internationally recognized and award-winning licensed landscape architect and sustainable fire-wise design advocate, our work embodies a holistic approach—considering every component of a site, from natural to cultural (“from soil to soul”)—to create landscapes that are both artistically beautiful and environmentally responsible.

As a full-service landscape design firm, we explore symbiotic connections within the Wild-Urban Interface (WUI), collaborating closely with clients and consultants to deliver unique, site-specific projects that enhance the value and experience for all users.

Position Overview: We are seeking a talented, motivated, and experienced Landscape Designer to join our team at Studio Pappaterra. In this role, you will be instrumental in creating and implementing innovative and sustainable landscape designs that meet client expectations and project requirements. This position offers a flexible work environment, with 90% remote work and 10% on-site supervision.

Responsibilities:

• Conceptual Design and Site Analysis: Participate in the conceptual ideation and site analysis of a project, including reference images, diagrammatic analysis, and conceptual rendered plans, as well as rendered views/sketches to convey the design intent.
• Detailed Design: Develop comprehensive plans, including planting plans, hardscape designs, and construction details.
• CAD, Renderings, Presentations, 3D Modeling: Apply expertise across all phases of design, from Site Analysis and Schematic Design to Construction Documentation, Construction Observation, Administration, and Post-Occupancy Review.
• Material Selection: Select plants, materials, and finishes that align with the design aesthetic and site conditions.

Project Management
• Site Analysis: Conduct site visits to assess topography, soil, vegetation, and drainage.
• Coordination: Collaborate with contractors, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate execution of the design.

Client Interaction
• Client Meetings: Engage in meetings to discuss project progress, design preferences, and revisions; proficiency in taking meeting minutes, task organization, and follow-up is essential.
• Presentations: Prepare and deliver design presentations, including boards, renderings, and mood boards.

Construction Administration
• Site Supervision: Oversee the implementation of landscape designs on-site, ensuring adherence to design specifications and quality standards.
• Problem Solving: Address challenges during construction, such as unexpected site conditions or client-requested changes.

Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship
• Sustainable Practices: Incorporate principles of sustainability, such as water conservation and native planting, into all projects.

Professional Development
• Continued Learning: Stay informed on industry trends, materials, and technologies through ongoing education.
• Mentorship: Opportunity to mentor junior designers or interns, as needed.

Documentation and Reporting
• Project Documentation: Maintain detailed records of design revisions, client communications, and project decisions.
• Reporting: Provide regular updates to clients and supervisors on project status, including progress reports and potential delays.

Qualifications:

Educational Background:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in landscape architecture.

Portfolio:
• A well-organized portfolio showcasing a range of projects that highlight design creativity, technical skill, and successful project outcomes.

Location:
• 90% remote, 10% on-site work.
