ROLE OVERVIEW

The Communications Department educates and activates Texans to advance strategic change in the areas of border and immigrants rights, free speech and pluralism, LGBTQIA+ equality, reproductive freedom, smart justice, and voting rights and democracy. Our department collaborates with every department across every issue area, providing interns with the opportunity to learn and work at the heart of the organizations integrated advocacy.

We're seeking a communications intern who will bring creativity, passion, and drive to our department. Specifically, they will have the chance to work with both our digital and press teams to contribute to daily operations and longer-term campaigns. Tasks may include drafting social media and website content, crafting press statements and media pitches, conducting message research, and working on an independent project if assigned by their supervisor.

Interns will gain valuable experience learning how to craft communications for specific audiences to advance strategic goals, as well as a unique perspective on how the ACLU of Texas operates.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

Internships are part-time, requiring a minimum commitment of 10- 15 hours per week. We generally prefer that part-time interns commit to work full workdays (i.e., two eight-hour days rather than four four-hour days).

Duration:
• Spring: 8 weeks (March 1, 2025 April 30, 2025)

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Our internship program is designed to provide valuable experience by working directly with team members in each department and across the organization.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
• Contribute to the day-to-day functions of the Communications Department, including writing internal and external-facing materials such as press releases, social media posts, and blogs with eye-catching graphics and sharable images.
• Conduct independent research on a specific topic or project related to an advocacy campaign, legislative bill, or internal capacity-building effort.
• Provide communications support for in-person events or other collaborations with the Engagement Department.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues across the ACLU of Texas to stay well informed of organizational priorities.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Interns should possess the following:
• Strong research, writing, and editing skills, preferably with experience drafting press releases, blogs, social media posts, or other digital content.
• Demonstrated interest in the news, preferably with familiarity of press outlets and social media platforms.
• Self-motivated ability to juggle multiple tasks and complete assignments on time with excellence.
