About the Opportunity
We're looking for a qualified tutor who can work in a face-to-face environment at various schools across Houston, Texas. As a Swahili speaking ESL Campus Immersion Tutor, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of migrant students and students learning to speak English. Our tutors are not just educators; they are mentors, role models, and catalysts for change.
Key Responsibilities
Work one-on-one with students to provide academic support in a variety of subjects, including Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading.
Develop lesson plans tailored to individual students' needs and assess their progress.
Communicate effectively with parents and teachers to ensure seamless collaboration.
Mentor elementary, middle, and high school-aged students, helping them prepare for STAAR exams.
Work with up to 15 students at a time, adapting to diverse learning styles and needs.
Utilize technology, including email, texting, Slack, and Google Sheets/Excel, to stay organized and communicate with the SiSTEM team.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must:
Be eligible to work in the United States and possess a valid Social Security Number.
Have reliable transportation and be able to attend in-person tutoring sessions in a timely manner.
Be able to pass a background check.
Possess great interpersonal skills, with the ability to adapt to students from diverse backgrounds.
Be technologically savvy, with proficiency in email, texting, Slack, and Google Sheets/Excel.
Demonstrate a selfless commitment to making a difference in students' lives.
Be bilingual and fluent in Swahili.
Preferred Qualifications
While not mandatory, the following qualifications will be considered a plus:
A college student with at least 60 credit hours or a college graduate (Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree holder).
A certified teacher with SBEC or other state licensure certification.
A retired teacher with SBEC or other state licensure certification.
Previous experience in mentoring, tutoring, or teaching in a classroom or school environment (1-2 years minimum).
Skilled in any grade level of Math, Science, Social Studies, or Reading.
Experience working with students who are learning to speak English.
