Come work in a district that has built six new elementary schools with state-of-the-art instructional and sustainable enhancements, has multiple partnerships with MSU, encourages continuous professional growth and learning and is highly supported by its families and community POSITION: English Language Learner Teacher ? 1.0 FTE LOCATION: East Lansing High School (.60 FTE) and MacDonald Middle School (.40 FTE) SALARY: Per ELEA Contract WORK YEAR: 23/24 School Year START DATE: August 21, 2023 REPORTS TO: Building Principal APPLICATION DEADLINE: August 9, 2023 GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the building Principal, and in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the English Language Learner Teacher is responsible for instructing English Language Learners (ELL) students in learning English as a second language. As a member of the professional staff, the ELL teacher has responsibilities in the areas of: instruction, curriculum development, classroom management, student relations, parent and community relations, and staff relations. DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES: Uses district goals and objectives to plan and implement a cohesive curriculum. Organizes learning activities to provide varied classroom activities that are congruent with educational goals and objectives. Teaches sheltered English to ELLs not yet possessing the English language skills to be successful in a general education English class. Differentiates lesson plans in areas of literature, vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking and listening skills; delivered instruction to meet all English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards, TESOL/ESL Standards and Michigan ELA standards for ELPS middle and high school English Language Learners (ELLs). Delivers academic support to students taking mainstream classes. Applies sound principles of learning and motivation in the planning, delivery and assessment phases of instructional delivery. Displays a high degree of knowledge in the subject matter assigned and continuously upgrade competence. Facilitates students? motivation for learning by communicating enthusiasm for the subject matter and for learning. Provides a safe, efficient, organized classroom environment. Encourages growth in study skills, written, and oral communication in the activities planned for students. Evaluates students effectively, providing meaningful and timely feedback and using the evaluation data to monitor and adjust instruction. Exhibits student work and provides opportunities for student recognition. Serves as an effective team member, collaborating with team members to integrate activities and provides an effective leaning environment for students. Establishes effective relationships with students and models respect for and acceptance of all persons in the school setting. Establishes effective relationships with parents, community and other staff members. Maintains professional ethics and responsibilities including participation in the total school program, participation in curriculum development and building committees and providing a positive role model for students. Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing, with a wide variety of audiences. Uses technology as a tool within the classroom and as a management tool. Carries out the required management tasks of a professional staff member (i.e. grading, attendance, conferences, etc.) Holds experience working with a diverse student population and/or a history of promoting diversity through his/her practices. EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: Valid Michigan certification as a secondary English teacher A minor or endorsement in ESL or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) required. Ability and desire to carry out all duties of the position. Strong interpersonal skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to professional growth.
