Work Schedule: Monday through Thursday 6:30pm-8:30pm Additional meetings, office hours, registration/orientation times as scheduled GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: Only candidates whose residential address is in Iowa will be considered for this position. Though classes take place online, the instructor must be able to regularly travel to a Kirkwood location (Coralville and/or Cedar Rapids) to participate in registration, orientation, and meetings. Under limited supervision, the instructor is responsible for teaching ESL courses to students enrolled in Kirkwood's Secondary Programs. Instruction will take place online (via Zoom), though there might be opportunities to teach in Coralville or Cedar Rapids if there are openings at those locations. Though classes take place online, the instructor must be able to regularly travel to a Kirkwood location (Coralville and/or Cedar Rapids) to participate in registration, orientation, and meetings. The instructor also assists students in transitioning from ESL courses to Kirkwood related work training and higher education opportunities in collaboration with other Kirkwood staff. Classes are held Monday through Thursday. The session dates include: August 28 to Oct 12, Oct. 23 to Dec. 14, Jan.16 to Feb. 29, March 18 to May 2, May 6 to May 30. Morning classes are held from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM or 11:15 AM to 1:15 PM. Evening classes are held from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, but currently there are no classes in the evening in Cedar Rapids. Currently there are 2 openings for evening classes (6:30 PM to 8:30 PM). The total hours per week for one class equates to 11.25 hours, with extra hours being available for team meetings, special projects, and professional development. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist students with coursework in a variety of formats including individualized instruction, computer assisted instruction, large group courses, and other methods. Collaborate with fellow learning center instructors on curriculum development, student intake/advising, and staff development activities. Conduct CASAS assessments for eligible students. Perform other related work duties as assigned. Provide contextualized, scaffolder, interactive instruction that includes cooperative learning tasks and implements ESL college and career readiness and CASAS ESL standards. Track attendance daily and submit reports. Respond in a timely matter to communications and requests from program director and coordinator. Participate in weekly team meetings and ongoing professional development opportunities. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS: Prior experience teaching adult ESL/ABE learners or working with adult immigrants Prior experience teaching ESL or foreign language at any age Bachelor's or master's degree in TESOL, Education, Foreign Language Teaching or related field TESOL training/certification preferred, such as K-12 certification in ESL, bachelors or graduate studies in TESOL, TEFL certification or completion of MN Literacy Council pre-service training courses for adult ESL educators ( ).
