Role Description
Incumbent serves as a Medical Record Technician (Coder) Outpatient and Inpatient in the Consolidated Coding section at Veteran Integrated Service Network (VISN 20) Alaska, Boise, Oregon, and Washington.
ā¢ Assigns codes to documented patient care encounters (inpatient and outpatient) for one or more specialty and subspecialty health care services provided by the VAMC.
ā¢ Has knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, diseases, treatments, diagnostic tests, and medications to ensure proper code selection.
ā¢ Selects and assigns codes from the current version of one or more coding systems including ICD, CPT, and HCPCS.
ā¢ Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines, and conventions for ethical, accurate, and complete coding.
ā¢ Monitors regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information for the full spectrum of services provided by the VAMC.
ā¢ Reviews health record documentation to abstract all required medical, surgical, ancillary, demographic, social, and administrative data.
ā¢ Assists facility staff with basic documentation requirements to reflect the patient care provided.
ā¢ Ensures provider documentation supports the diagnoses and procedures coded.
ā¢ Utilizes the facility computer system and software applications to code, abstract, record, and transmit data to the national VA database.
ā¢ Uses a variety of computer applications in day-to-day activities, such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and Access.
ā¢ Assists in orienting and instructing new personnel and/or students from affiliated health information or medical record technology programs.
ā¢ Works within a team environment; supports peers in meeting goals and deadlines.
Qualifications
ā¢ One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
ā¢ Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) including skill in applying current coding classifications, ability to communicate with clinical staff, and ability to research and solve coding issues.
Requirements
ā¢ United States Citizenship.
ā¢ Experience or education in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health records.
ā¢ Certification through AHIMA or AAPC.
ā¢ Proficiency in spoken and written English.
