Role Description
The Northport VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for one Lead Medical Records Technician Coder (Outpatient/Inpatient). This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section of the business office.
ā¢ Reviews coding and assists coders in improving accuracy.
ā¢ Provides guidance to various levels of staff to promote consistency in practice and compliance with coding rules and regulations.
ā¢ Assigns codes to documented patient care encounters (inpatient or outpatient).
ā¢ Applies advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications, and procedures.
ā¢ Selects and assigns codes from current versions of coding systems including ICD, CPT, and HCPCS.
ā¢ Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines, and conventions.
ā¢ Monitors ever-changing regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information.
ā¢ Performs a comprehensive review of the patient health record to abstract various data.
ā¢ Assists facility staff with documentation requirements to accurately reflect patient care.
ā¢ Uses a variety of window-based applications in day-to-day activities.
ā¢ Effectively communicates both orally and in writing to meet program objectives.
ā¢ Works within a team environment to provide technical guidance and coordinate activities.
Qualifications
ā¢ United States Citizenship.
ā¢ One year of creditable experience indicating knowledge of medical terminology and health records.
ā¢ Associate's degree in health information technology/management or related field with relevant coursework.
ā¢ Equivalent combinations of creditable experience and education are qualifying.
Requirements
ā¢ Mastery level certification in health information management or coding.
ā¢ Ability to work with a team and provide technical guidance.
ā¢ Advanced knowledge of current coding classification systems.
ā¢ Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
ā¢ Knowledge of training methods and ability to train new coding staff.
ā¢ Ability to collect and analyze data and present results.
ā¢ Leadership skills, including interpersonal relations and conflict resolution.
