What You Will Do

Join the High Performance Computing Environments Group (HPC-ENV) at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where we manage and operate advanced large scale computing infrastructure supporting a diverse range of critical workloads. We seek experienced professionals in HPC Programming & Runtime Environments (PRE) Team to ensure the reliable operation of our production system software & testing environment, which include:

Large-Scale Modeling & Simulation (e.g., physics, engineering, climate)
Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI/ML) deployments
Emerging Architectures for next-generation computing needs

Key Responsibilities

Provide software environments for HPC user and application code teams
Provide testing infrastructure to ensure performance and stability of LANL HPC & AI clusters
Maintain and support a variety of compilers, libraries (MPI), debuggers, AI/ML tools, and general utilities
Work with CI/CD and container-driven processes, involving DevOps and system administration
Compose and run test suites on HPC clusters for system health checking, data gathering, and performance benchmarking
Maintain, modify, and develop tests, as well as the testing framework

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 1 or Scientist 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Scientist 1 ($94,500 - $154,600)

Responsibilities:

Install, support and maintain software used on HPC & AI resources at the LANL, largely using a containerized, CI/CD driven workflow.
Work across organizational HPC groups on tool installation, management, and testing.
Drive software optimization for large-scale, diverse workloads (simulation, AI/ML, etc.)
Work closely with software vendors and provide support for third party packages.
Collaborate with stakeholders and vendors to define system software requirements
Champion adoption of innovative practices in HPC management and automation
Contributes to and presents technical presentations, papers and technical reports at conferences, and meetings.
May need to work under pressure of frequent interruptions and conflicting priorities.
Participate in a weekly on-call rotation to provide production support coverage

Scientist 2 ($96,100 - $164,100)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will:

Responsibilities:

Technical leadership of projects
Use project assignments to further organizational goals
Enhance technical and professional expertise of junior staff through mentoring and training
Research, evaluate and recommend new software tools and packages for usage in LANL's HPC software stack
Provide tool education opportunities to users of LANL's HPC platforms.
May contribute to the development of novel custom tools, especially in the areas of software deployment, and testing.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Linux knowledge and experience
Programming skills (Python, Bash, C/C++)
Application compilation and linking
Familiarity with: CI/CD pipeline creation and management - How to automate development tasks and workflows using CI/CD

Additional Requirements for Scientist 2:

Proficiency in C, C++, and Python programming
Configuration and management using tools such as Ansible, Puppet or Chef.
MPI and Parallel programming - Fundamentals of parallel programming models - threading and MPI
AI/ML Experience - AI/ML toolkits and workflows

Education/Experience for the lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience for the higher level: Positions requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation

Desired Qualifications:

HPC Computing Experience - Knowledge of HPC, their environments and supporting infrastructure.
Software debugging tools and methods - Experience with application debugging tools, especially HPC specific tools such as GDB, Totalview or Forge.
Spack - Building and troubleshooting software builds via Spack.
Knowledge of open source build systems (CMake, autotools), and compilers
Solid understanding of HPC cluster usage and components, as well as fundamentals of MPI and threading
Experience with DevOps and system administration

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
