Fully Remote Network Transport Engineer
About the position
TEKsystems is seeking a seasoned Transport Engineer to support the design, implementation, and maintenance of a high-performance IP/MPLS core network for a top-tier Alaska-based ISP. This fully remote role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge optical and IP technologies in a collaborative environment, driving the reliability, scalability, and performance of a carrier-grade infrastructure.
Responsibilities
ā¢ Design, Planning & Engineering
ā¢ Architect packet-optical transport solutions with fiber route validation, power budgets, and OSNR margins
ā¢ Conduct fiber characterization (OTDR, CD, PMD, splice loss, return loss) to validate optical paths
ā¢ Engineer long-haul and metro DWDM/ROADM links using Ciena 6500 and photonic line systems
ā¢ Implementation, Turn-Up & Migration
ā¢ Deploy and test fiber spans using OTDR, OSA, PMD/CD analyzers
ā¢ Lead SONET/TDM to OTN/IP migrations with comprehensive fiber health checks
ā¢ Troubleshoot fiber impairments (CD, PMD, reflections, non-linear effects) impacting DWDM/OTN performance
ā¢ Deploy 400G/800G coherent optics ensuring OSNR/CD/PMD thresholds are met
ā¢ Documentation & Workflow
ā¢ Manage service orders and circuit designs using MetaSolv or equivalent systems
ā¢ Maintain fiber characterization records and historical performance data
ā¢ Document MOPs, rollback plans, rack elevations, and post-change reports
ā¢ Track maintenance window activities and verify post-implementation success
ā¢ Tools & Platforms
ā¢ Design & Documentation: Visio, AutoCAD, Confluence, SharePoint
ā¢ Inventory & Provisioning: MetaSolv, Mosaic, Cramer, Granite
ā¢ Performance Monitoring: MCP (Ciena), Salesforce
Requirements
ā¢ Deep expertise in Nokia, MPLS, BGP, and network engineering
ā¢ Proven ability to lead complex projects and mentor junior engineers
ā¢ Advanced understanding of high availability, redundancy, testing, and security standards
ā¢ Strong cross-disciplinary engineering knowledge and decision-making autonomy
ā¢ Exceptional time and budget management across multiple concurrent initiatives
