Fractional Controller / CFO (Full Time Role)

SMB Team is seeking an internal, FULL TIME HIRE who can serve as part of our team of Fractional Financial Executives (Director of Finance/Controller) to our portfolio of law firm owner clients. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of financial management (preferably within the legal industry or other professional services industries) and the ability to provide strategic insights and guidance to improve financial performance and support growth. This is a hands-on, client-facing role.

This role will serve as the embedded financial strategist for a portfolio of 10–20 law firm clients β€” delivering CFO-level analysis, cash flow management, and strategic financial guidance through the SMB Financial OS and the Law Firm Growth Accelerator Model. Every client receives a consistent, high-quality experience regardless of which FCFO serves them.

The salary for this role is $125,000 annually.

Key Responsibilities:
β€’ Serve as the primary financial point of contact for a portfolio of 10–20 law firm clients β€” owning the relationship, the monthly cadence, and the quality of every deliverable.
β€’ Deliver all financial reporting, cash flow forecasts, budgets, and variance analyses on a consistent monthly basis
β€’ Evaluate the monthly close reviews for each client β€” validating balance sheet integrity, reviewing P&L trending, monitoring AR aging, and flagging financial risks before they become problems.
β€’ Apply the Law Firm Growth Accelerator Model consistently across all client engagements β€” using its framework to assess performance, advise on staffing decisions, and guide partners toward sustainable growth.
β€’ Context-switch efficiently across a diverse client portfolio β€” moving between personal injury, family law, estate, flat-fee, and hourly billing firms with precision and professionalism.
β€’ Collaborate with the bookkeeping team on shared clients β€” ensuring clean, timely books are delivered as a foundation for CFO-level analysis each month.
β€’ 5+ years of accounting or finance experience, with strong proficiency in financial statement preparation, cash flow management, and budgeting.
β€’ Background in a multi-client environment β€” public accounting firm, BPO, fractional finance platform, or similar. Must have managed 5+ client files simultaneously.
β€’ Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online β€” QBO ProAdvisor certification a strong plus.
β€’ Experience with Clio or other legal billing software preferred.
β€’ Familiarity with law firm financial metrics: utilization, realization, billing, and collections cycles, IOLTA/trust accounting.
β€’ Strong client communication skills β€” able to present financial data clearly to non-financial law firm owners.
β€’ Remote-work experienced with strong self-management and time-tracking discipline.

β€’ Must have multi-client experience β€” candidates with only single-entity backgrounds will not be considered.
β€’ Must be willing to operate exclusively within the SMB Financial OS and standardized EOP framework
β€’ Must be detail-oriented with a track record of accurate, timely financial deliverables.
β€’ Must have the ability to advise law firm partners on strategy based on financial data.
β€’ Must have expert-level skills in Excel and QuickBooks Online.
