As a Tutoring Specialist at AVC, you will play a critical role in delivering specialized learning support services to our students, working collaboratively with our faculty and staff to ensure student success. Job Summary We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Tutoring Specialist to join our team at Antelope Valley College. As a Tutoring Specialist, you will provide a range of learning support services to students in our designated Learning Center programs, including tutoring, academic advising, and assessment. You will also supervise student tutors and other hourly employees, develop and implement program marketing strategies, and maintain accurate records and reports. Key Responsibilities Provide specialized learning support services to students in designated Learning Center programs, including explaining and demonstrating concepts, creating or modifying materials as necessary, and discussing and resolving student problems and issues. Supervise student or volunteer tutors and other student and hourly employees, including scheduling tutoring appointments, recruiting and training new tutors, and evaluating tutor performance. Coordinate, schedule, and administer tests, drills, and other evaluation tools; determine appropriate skill levels and recommend resources for improvement. Create and maintain individual student files; input information into a database; update student progress according to established procedures. Operate and maintain computers in the designated lab; troubleshoot program malfunctions; load and unload software; select software in conjunction with the Learning Center Technician and other personnel. Develop and modify flyers, forms, and documents for use in programs; design program Web pages using established IT standards. Collect, analyze, and interpret data regarding student attendance and tutorial programs; conduct database research and prepare reports to discuss with faculty and staff. Order, receive, and store supplies, materials, and equipment; maintain inventories to assure adequate levels. Essential Qualifications Any combination equivalent to two years of college-level coursework in one or more specific subject areas and two years of practical experience in the area of specialization. Knowledge of tutoring/learning theory and practice with adult learners. Principles, practices, procedures, and equipment of an assigned instructional support lab. Providing care and security of equipment, materials, and supplies. Basic computer operations, maintenance, and repair. Principles and practices of providing work direction and training. Record-keeping techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a higher education setting. Familiarity with learning management systems and educational software. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Skills and Competencies Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently with minimal direction. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
