Experienced Live Event Director II – Remote and In-House Production Leader for ESPN's High-Profile Games and Events

Job Summary The Live Event Director II will be responsible for line-producing live events in-house (REMI) and on-remote, including a portion of ESPN's most complex and high-profile games. During live event productions, you will be accountable for executing the technical production of the broadcast, following storylines, and working with the Producer to record the game. Additionally, you will work closely with Coordinating Producers and Producers to offer support and guidance on content strategies and inclusion. As a leader in the team, you will oversee the long-range planning and coordination of specific projects, working closely with Production, Creative Services, and Operations to provide the guiding framework for execution and feature integration into productions. Key Responsibilities Designs, coordinates, and executes live productions of live remote and REMI games, appropriately reporting allocated events. Supervises technical teams for live event productions; providing guidance, feedback, and development. Works closely with Remote Operations to determine technical facility and personnel needs for broadcasts. Collaborates with Producers and Coordinating Producers to determine a creative vision and technical direction as it applies to the show, driving innovation and new workflows that leverage technology. When necessary, will organize and lead meetings to develop production and operational strategies. Makes ongoing decisions regarding what images and sounds will be broadcast; interprets data and information to decide camera angles, elements, and sequences. Works with Producer and Operations team to determine camera placement at each venue; designs and executes the capture of desired shots, live-to-tape builds, and sequences of shots. Works with engineering professionals to integrate all elements in a broadcast, including graphics, enhanced technology elements, switcher effects, composite music, and more. Coordinates technical teams and remote employees assigned to events; conducts production and technical meetings to define team responsibilities and outline expectations for live remote events. Teams up with Scheduling department to best assign technical production teams for live events; provides real-time feedback on the Remote Operations team and Maintenance division if applicable. Prepares for each game by conducting research on the teams, players, storylines, trends, and more. Provides guidance to live directors prior to broadcasts and guides them as needed during broadcasts. Makes on-the-spot article adjustments to coverage plans as unexpected situations and opportunities arise. Investigates, in real-time, operational issues that arise during assigned games. Has the knowledge and ability to direct studio-related productions, both in-house and on-remote. Provides ongoing feedback to Directors and Associate Directors and documents written feedback to Management. Essential Qualifications To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications: Top-to-bottom live remote game directing skills. Knowledge of the live game directing process. Ability to clearly and succinctly communicate to all team members during the live broadcast. Knowledge of the technical equipment involved in directing live remote games. Knowledge of sports history. Travel required. Preferred Qualifications While not essential, the following preferred qualifications will be highly regarded: At least 4 years of complex live game directing experience. Understanding of the financial implications of directing live remote and REMI games. Passion for popular culture and assistance in defining ESPN viewer tastes. Understanding of market positioning and strategies of assigned games. Education Requirements The following education requirements apply to this role: High school diploma required. Preferred: Bachelor's degree in broadcasting, communication, journalism, or a closely related field.
