Job Highlights and Responsibilities The Associate Counsel position is a critical role within GEICO's Staff Counsel, located in Indianapolis, with the primary responsibility of defending lawsuits filed in Indiana courts and other first-party insurance defense cases. As an Associate Counsel, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of cases, developing and honing your litigation skills, and contributing to the success of the company. Research and Analysis: Conduct thorough research on laws and regulations, preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda to support case strategy and defense. Case Management: Render opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department, and prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery. Trial and Hearing Preparation: Defend cases by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable, and conduct depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath. Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with the Claims Department, management, and other stakeholders to ensure effective case management and communication. Qualifications and Requirements To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a combination of education, experience, and skills that align with the requirements of the position. These include: Juris Doctor Degree: A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school is required. Admission to the Indiana Bar: Admission to the Indiana Bar is required, and you must be licensed in good standing to practice law in Indiana. Litigation Experience: 2-6+ years of experience in litigation, preferably in insurance defense, personal injury, or a related field. Travel Requirements: Ability to travel as required, including attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences. Documentation and Communication: Ability to document files in a clear, concise, and professional written manner, and communicate effectively with customers, clients, co-workers, and other employees. Preferred Qualifications While not required, the following qualifications are preferred: Civil Litigation Experience: Experience in civil litigation, particularly in insurance defense-related cases. Insurance Defense Experience: Experience in insurance defense-related litigation, with a strong understanding of insurance laws and regulations. Professional Communication: Ability to communicate in a professional manner in person, via telephone, and written correspondence/email. Skills and Competencies To excel in this role, you will need to possess a range of skills and competencies, including: Strong Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to analyze complex cases, identify key issues, and develop effective case strategies. Excellent Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
