As a pivotal member of our team, you will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of Black, brown, and queer youth in Oakland, aged 8-19, by fostering a safe and supportive community that encourages bravery in writing. About Chapter 510 Ink At Chapter 510 Ink, we believe that writing is an act of liberation. Our mission is to empower every young person in Oakland to write with confidence and joy. Through our vibrant writing center and partnerships with Oakland public schools, we provide a range of programs that help young people improve their writing craft, confidence, and competency. As a High School Teaching Artist, you will be instrumental in delivering our creative writing workshops and program offerings, working closely with educators to create a transformative experience for our students. Key Responsibilities Teaching: Conduct in-person youth writing workshops or other program offerings on-site or at partner schools, ensuring that students complete their work and submit final drafts for publication. Curriculum Development: Design curriculum aligned with Chapter 510 pedagogy, submitting teaching plans and lists of needed technology and supplies prior to teaching. Mentorship: Work with the Program & Community Manager to orient writing mentors to their role and goals, providing clear direction on supporting students. Publication: Write introductions for publications, ensure student writers' work is in final draft form, and provide developmental editing support as needed. Collaboration: Participate in weekly staff meetings, all-staff annual planning retreats, and help maintain the cleanliness and organization of our facility spaces. Essential Qualifications To excel as a High School Teaching Artist with Chapter 510 Ink, you should possess: At least 3 to 5 years of experience as a teaching artist for youth, preferably with Oakland-based arts or education-based organizations. A deep understanding of creative writing, specifically poetry, and curriculum development. Excellent time and project management skills, with the ability to juggle competing projects and deadlines. A commitment to liberatory education and the values expressed in Chapter 510's mission and vision, including racial and gender justice. The ability to work across lines of difference, including with BIPOC communities, poor and low-income communities, immigrant communities, and other marginalized groups. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with Oakland-based arts or education-based organizations. English-Spanish skills. Knowledge of Macintosh systems.
