About the Role As an AVID Tutor with Montebello Unified School District, you will play a vital role in supporting the academic success of our students. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college-readiness program that aims to close the achievement gap by providing students with the skills, knowledge, and motivation needed to succeed in higher education. As an AVID Tutor, you will work closely with students, teachers, and administrators to deliver targeted instruction, provide individualized support, and promote a culture of academic excellence. Key Responsibilities Academic Support: Assist with the preparation, reinforcement, and presentation of materials related to instructional programs in mathematics, English, foreign language, social science, and/or sciences. Mini-Lessons: Conduct mini-lessons on writing in multiple subjects, study skills, and other academic aspects to enhance student learning. Individualized Instruction: Provide students with individualized or small group instruction to supplement teacher presentations and cater to diverse learning needs. Progress Monitoring: Report students' progress to specified staff, ensuring that students are on track to meet their academic goals. AVID Strategies: Apply AVID-based strategies, including WICOR, Cornell note-taking, and Socratic seminars, to enhance academic performance and promote critical thinking. Other Duties: Distribute and collect textbooks, test booklets, learning packets, and other instructional materials, as well as encourage students to continue their education and pursue post-secondary opportunities. Essential Qualifications To be considered for this role, you must meet the following minimum qualifications: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, with proof of completion of at least 12 college semester units or current enrollment as a full-time college student. Knowledge of instruction delivery methods, effective communication techniques, and core AVID curriculum. Ability to serve as a role model for students, follow written and oral instructions, and apply basic tutoring methods. Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to write clear, concise reports and deliver oral presentations. Preferred Qualifications While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable: Higher degree (Associate's, Bachelor's, etc.) in a relevant field. Experience working with students in an academic setting, particularly within the AVID program. Strong understanding of elementary and secondary school environments, as well as AVID program goals and objectives. Skills and Competencies To succeed as an AVID Tutor, you will need to possess the following skills and competencies: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and administrators. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic educational environment. Proficiency in using computers and other equipment related to assigned tasks.
