Engineering Technician/Assistant (Transportation Construction)
Hennepin County's Transportation department is seeking an Engineering Technician or Assistant Engineering Technician to work with the construction inspection crew. The role involves assisting in construction activities, including inspection, material testing, and survey computations.ResponsibilitiesAssist in construction inspection, material testing, and construction survey activitiesAssist in construction staking and survey computationsPerform or check basic quantity, alignment, mathematical, or geometric calculations for construction projectsRead and interpret construction plans and technical specificationsObserve construction activities for compliance to the project plans and specificationsPerform quality control tests on construction materialsPerform material testing in a lab setting on a variety of construction materialsPerform or check more complex quantity, alignment, mathematical, or geometric calculations for construction projectsMay act as chief inspector on simple road or bridge construction projects; act as lead inspector in any category of materials or construction inspection of complex projectsMay direct, train, and check the work of technicians in lower level classificationsSkillsFor hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I): One of the following: Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology or land surveying training programOne or more years of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering workOne year of experience analyzing numerical data using computer software applications, or developing and maintaining computerized information system applicationsThirty (30) college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science, or engineering related technical coursesA valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permitAbility to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodationFor hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II): One of the following: Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering workThree years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science fieldCurrent certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permitAbility to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodationCertification(s) from the MnDOT Technical Certification ProgramExperience: Operating survey equipment such as total station, levels, and/or tripodsOperating inspection and materials testing equipment such as air tester, proctors, and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP)Using computer software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStationOperating materials lab testing equipmentKnowledge of: Math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometryConstruction equipment, materials, and methodsAbility to: Communicate with staff at all levels of the organizationMaintain neat and accurate recordsBenefitsCurrent Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus.Full-time, benefit earning positions.Competitive payWork-life balanceA variety of benefitsOpportunities to growCompany OverviewHennepin County is a government firm that offers licenses, permits, hazardous waste, property tax, housing program, public, and law safety.
