The Role: Peer Mentor – Be a Source of Support and Inspiration

As a Peer Mentor, you will play a vital role in empowering the next generation by providing crucial support, accountability, and valuable life skills to high school students. You will connect with teens who share similar lived experiences, offering a safe and understanding space for them to explore their challenges, build confidence, and develop coping mechanisms. This is not just a mentoring role; it’s an opportunity to share your wisdom, resilience, and hope with young people who need it most.

This is a fully virtual position, offering flexibility and the ability to connect with teens from the comfort of your own home. You will engage with mentees through live video sessions and text-based chat, fostering a supportive and engaging relationship. All Appa mentors will receive comprehensive training in evidence-based support techniques, ensuring you are equipped to provide exceptional mentorship. You will also participate in weekly supervision meetings led by a licensed therapist, allowing for ongoing skill development and community building with fellow mentors.

Key Responsibilities

Provide weekly individual support to adolescents (ages 13-18) via live video and text-based chat, fostering a trusting and empathetic relationship.
Actively listen to mentees, validate their experiences, and offer guidance based on your own lived experiences and evidence-based support techniques.
Help mentees identify goals, develop action plans, and track progress.
Participate in weekly mentor group consultations led by a licensed therapist to enhance skills, share best practices, and receive support.
Provide valuable feedback to the Appa Health operations team on program improvements and new tools.
Integrate fun and creative activities into mentoring sessions to enhance engagement and build rapport.
Stay up-to-date on relevant resources and support systems for teens.
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to Appa Health’s ethical guidelines.

Qualifications

Must identify as a Gen Z or Millennial.
Bachelor's degree required (preferably in Psychology, Social Work, or a related mental health field, or equivalent relevant experience).
1 year of experience working with minors or in a mental health setting (preferred).
Pass a comprehensive background check.
Strong ability to connect and relate to diverse teens, including racial/ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, and neurodevelopmental diversity.
Extremely tech-savvy with ample experience using platforms relevant for teens (social media, gaming, phone apps).
Strong communication and motivational skills.
Desire to learn and share experiences within a diverse team.
Reliable internet connection for conducting video sessions.
