Director of Digital Publishing

Remote Full-time
Overview of Role

We are seeking a Director of Digital Publishing to lead the execution and continuous improvement of how our curricula are delivered to teachers and students through our digital platform and related formats. This is not a purely managerial role– success requires a willingness to engage directly in the details of content production and publishing.

This role sits at the intersection of curriculum, product, implementation, and operations. It is responsible for ensuring that high-quality instructional materials are translated into a polished, accurate, and reliable user experience on our website, digital assignment platform, and in supporting formats such as printable materials.

The Director of Digital Publishing will own the systems and processes that move curricular content from final draft to “classroom ready” (meaning complete, accurate, usable by, and worthy of, teachers and students), lead complex cross-functional projects, and manage the team responsible for executing digital content publication.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who combines strong project management skills with an operational mindset, exceptional attention to detail, and a high bar for quality. This role requires both leading the work and stepping into the details: reviewing content, solving problems, and directly supporting execution when needed.

Job Responsibilities

Own end-to-end digital publishing execution
• Oversee the delivery of Fishtank curricula to the main website, student assignment platform (Fishtank Student) and other formats (e.g., printable files), ensuring accuracy, completeness, consistency, and quality
• Establish and maintain clear standards for what “classroom ready” publication looks like
• Ensure clear ownership and accountability at each stage of the publishing process
• Collaborate closely with curriculum development teams to ensure content is delivered on time and meets internal and external expectations
• Make decisions about timelines, tradeoffs, and readiness for publication in coordination with key stakeholders
• Step in directly to conduct QA, materials formatting, or complete uploading work when needed to ensure deadlines and quality standards are met
• Serve as the final reviewer and decision maker for when content can “go live,” including conducting detailed final reviews to ensure accuracy, completeness, and classroom readiness

Lead complex, cross-functional projects
• Drive planning and execution of curriculum publishing projects with multiple dependencies
• Build and manage timelines, workflows, and tracking systems across teams, using tools such as Jira and Google Sheets
• Identify risks, manage tradeoffs, and ensure work stays on track
• Partner closely with the curriculum, product, partnership, and implementation teams to align on priorities and sequencing

Manage and support the Digital Content team
• Directly manage the team responsible for uploading, formatting, and maintaining digital content
• Set clear expectations, priorities, and workflows for the team
• Provide coaching, feedback, and support to ensure high-quality execution and strong engagement and retention
• Ensure the team is operating efficiently and sustainably as volume and complexity fluctuate
• Model a high bar for detail and quality by staying close to the work and providing hands-on guidance

Improve publishing systems and workflows
• Identify inefficiencies, gaps, or recurring issues in current processes
• Design and implement improvements to increase clarity, speed, and reliability
• Partner with curriculum, product, and engineering to improve tools and systems that support content production and publication

Serve as a key cross-functional partner
• Act as the organizational lead and primary point of contact for digital publishing
• Translate between curriculum, product, partnership, and implementation teams to ensure smooth execution
• Maintain clear visibility into progress, risks, and upcoming work

Experience and Skills

We are seeking a director-level individual with 8+ years of work experience, with emphasis in K-12 education, curriculum publishing and/or project management.

Strong project management
• At least 3 years experience leading complex, multi-stakeholder projects from planning through delivery
• Ability to manage multiple workstreams while maintaining attention to detail
• Proven track record of delivering high-quality work on time

Detail-oriented, execution mindset
• Comfortable working at a high level and in the details
• Willing and able to dive into curricular content, review materials closely, and ensure quality at the final stages of production

People management experience
• At least 3 years experience managing and developing a team responsible for executional work
• Ability to set clear expectations, provide individual feedback, and build a strong team culture of ownership and quality

Operational and systems mindset
• Experience improving workflows, processes, or operational systems
• Comfortable identifying problems and implementing practical solutions

High bar for quality
• Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and completeness; able to consistently catch issues others miss and ensure content meets a high standard before publication
• Ability to define and uphold standards across a body of work

Cross-functional collaboration
• Experience working closely with different teams (e.g., curriculum, product, engineering, sales, etc.)
• Clear, proactive communicator who can keep stakeholders aligned

Experience with K-12 digital content, publishing, or edtech
• Familiarity with CMS tools, digital publishing workflows, digital asset management, or content operations
• At least 3 years experience in K-12 education and/or curriculum development roles
• Ability to use knowledge of classrooms and school and district systems to develop project approaches and prioritize tasks
