With its natural beauty, affordable housing, excellent educational system, abundance of recreational opportunities, and excellent quality of life, Shasta County is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.ABOUT THE DEPARTMENTThe Public Works Department is responsible for construction and maintenance of County facilities, including buildings, roads, bridges, and airports; and for managing permanent road divisions to provide maintenance of private roads on behalf of the citizens in those districts. The department employs engineers and technicians who prepare construction plans as well as supervise construction of these facilities. The responsibilities of County Surveyor, Road Commissioner and Chief Engineer of the Water Agency are administered by the department. The department reviews land development maps and improvement plans as well as survey mapping for compliance with the Subdivision Map Act and County Development Standards. Administration of the County's solid waste management functions including waste collection and ownership of an active landfill are the responsibility of the department. The County water agency is managed by the department. In addition, the Public Works Department oversees the operation and maintenance of several County service areas. These service areas include both water and sewer districts along with road, lighting, and flood maintenance districts. The department is responsible for Flood Plain Administration.The Roads Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining about 1,200 miles of County roadways and associated structures. The budget unit for Roads is funded solely from federal and state sources.The Facilities Management Division of Public Works provides for the maintenance, repair, and minor renovation of County buildings, parks, and grounds. In addition, the division also provides maintenance, custodial, and landscape services.Fleet Management is responsible for maintaining and repairing a fleet of more than 375 County vehicles. Additionally, Fleet Management works closely with the Purchasing Unit within the Department of Support Services on buying new and replacement vehicles for the fleet. The County has a vehicle replacement program designed to keep the fleet modern and in safe working condition.ABOUT THE POSITIONCustodian I/II: Working independently, perform a variety of general cleaning and custodial work; and to perform related work as required. IDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate will have prior custodial experience emptying trash receptacles, vacuuming, mopping floors, dusting, restroom sanitization, cleaning windows, sweeping walkways, and removing cobwebs in an office and maintenance facilities settings. Working knowledge of sanitizing furniture, various textiles, and upholsteries, including stain removal; and of floor care techniques including carpet cleaning; washing, stripping, waxing, and refinishing is vital to this position. Prior custodial experience in hospitals, schools, assisted living centers, and government offices is preferred. Prior experience which indicates the ability to work independently is preferred. Flexibility in shift and work schedule is essential to this position. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSCustodian I: This is the entry level class in the custodial series. An incumbent would normally promote to Custodian II after a year on training and successful performance as a Custodian I.Custodian II: The Custodian II class is the experienced-level class in the Custodian series. Incumbents are expected to be familiar with janitorial supplies, equipment, and proper cleaning procedures. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Custodian I: Sweeps, dusts, mops, scrubs, vacuums, waxes, and buffs floors; dusts, waxes, washes and polishes furniture and woodwork; replenishes supplies, empties and cleans waste receptacles; cleans restrooms; washes windows, walls, window shades, window sills, ledges and Venetian blinds; cleans heating and air conditioning ventilators; replaces light bulbs; cleans and dusts books and shelves; polishes metal work; moves and arranges furniture and equipment for cleaning purposes; turns out lights and locks doors and windows; takes care of equipment and materials used in the work; may raise and lower flags; may occasionally operate a light truck or automobile; when assigned to the Mental Health Inpatient Unit, will also change bed linen and disinfect mattresses.Custodian II: Sweeps, dusts, mops, scrubs, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floors; dusts, waxes, washes and polishes furniture and woodwork; replenishes supplies, empties and cleans waste receptacles; cleans restrooms; washes windows, walls, window shades, window sills, ledges and Venetian blinds; cleans heating and air conditioning ventilators; replaces light bulbs; cleans and dusts books and shelves; polishes metal work; moves and arranges furniture and equipment for cleaning purposes; turns out lights and secures building and windows; cleans and maintains equipment and materials used in the work; may raise and lower flags; properly sort trash and dispose of recycle products; may be assigned to lead and train Custodian I's or temporary workers; may occasionally operate a light truck, automobile, or aerial work platform up to 50’ high.
