COUNTY JAILER

Remote Full-time
SALARY: $4,799.33 monthly or $27.69 per hour (after probationary period)

ANNUAL CERTIFIED SALARY: $57,591.98

Standard probationary period of 6 months during which time salary is reduced by $50.00 per month.

SHIFT: Ability to work any shift including nights, weekends and holidays with varying days off. Most Jailers work 12-hour shifts, either 5AM-5PM or 5PM-5AM. Pay day is every other Friday. There are 26 pay days per calendar year.

PAID OVERTIME: Any overtime is paid on each paycheck. Overtime paid at 1.5 times the regular hourly rate. Beginning October 1, 2024, there is a $5,000.00 supplement as part of the salary figure listed above. Base salary is $52,591.98.

LICENSE REQUIRED: Applicants for Jailer positions with Nolan County Sheriff's Office must meet all requirements to become "temporarily licensed" as a County Jailer and then successfully pass the Basic County Corrections Officer course and state licensing exam within the first 12 months of employment or already be fully licensed as a County Jailer with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

RESIDENCY: Employees are encouraged to reside within the boundaries of Nolan County. However, Jailers can live outside Nolan County within a maximum one (1) hour drive time that includes allowances for traffic and/or inclement weather.

LONGEVITY PAY: $5.00 per month for each year of completed service after five years;
6-10 years of service = $10.00 per month for each year of completed service;
10-15 years of service = $15.00 per month for each year of completed service and thereafter.

HEALTH, DENTAL AND LIFE INSURANCE: Excellent major medical health insurance (currently Blue Cross/Blue Shield) is provided for the employee at no cost. Dental insurance coverage is also provided for the employee as well as a $10,000 life insurance policy. Dependent health and dental coverages are available with monthly premiums paid by the employee.

LEAVE TIME: 80 hours of vacation per year. (120 hrs. of vacation per year after 10 years of County service); 13 paid holidays (8 hrs. per holiday - 104 hours annually); 8 hours of sick leave accumulated per month up to a maximum of 480 hours.

RETIREMENT: Texas County and District Retirement System (TCDRS). Nolan County contributes $1.70 match for each dollar the employee has withheld.

UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT: Uniforms, coats, duty rig, radio and accessories are provided.

NATURE OF WORK: COUNTY JAILER handles control room operations, reads pass-on logs, receives activity briefings from off-going shift personnel, processes new inmates, and performs searches of individuals and or jail facility to locate weapons and or contraband, monitors, detects and deters improper behavior, and provides custodial care necessary for the security and well being of inmates confined in the Nolan County jail. Furthermore, the jail / detention officer prepares inmates for transport to the court system, supervises inmate visitation, and directs inmates while out of the cell areas during transport, work assignments, and recreation. Distributes food to inmates, conducts security checks, and oversees inmate sentence calculation and releases by reviewing court commitments. Prepares logs, records and reports of jail activities and may perform other related duties as required. Work is performed under the direction of Jail Administrator, Marsha Harris and functions may vary by individual assignment.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Include reading/writing (reports, legal documents, etc.), the ability to operate a computer (Windows) and communicate on phone and in person. Some combination of sitting, twisting the upper body, reaching, bending, stooping, standing, walking, kneeling, the use of arms and hands for computer input, crouching, running, climbing, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects (150+ pounds).

In addition, a Jail/Detention officer may be required to use bodily force to gain control of inmate(s), be able to run, protect him/herself by employing defensive tactics, and administer first aid. Performance of these tasks can involve maximum physical exertion with little or no prior notice and possibly for extended periods of time. May be exposed to extreme noise levels, occasional exposure to communicable diseases and may be subjected to verbal and physical abuse.

All officers are required to attend a 3-1/2 week course at the West Central Texas Law Enforcement Academy for Jailer/Detention Officer certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Upon successful completion of the Academy and state exam, Certified Jail/Detention officer status is attained.
