About the position

The University of Minnesota is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Computational Biologist/Data Scientist to join Dr. Vivek's lab in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. This position is hybrid, requiring at least three days a week in the office located on the West Bank of Minneapolis's campus. The successful candidate will focus on statistical analysis of epidemiological and high-dimensional omics datasets, contributing to research aimed at identifying blood biomarkers associated with aging and age-related outcomes such as diabetes, dementia, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Dr. Vivek's research employs machine learning methods to integrate high-dimensional multi-omics data, providing biological insights into aging and disease pathways. The role will involve specialization in statistical and computational biology analyses, utilizing extensive phenotype data from large population-based cohorts. Key responsibilities include performing statistical and bioinformatics analysis, managing large datasets, developing systems for data storage, implementing scalable workflows, and collaborating with researchers to document and present findings. The candidate will also assist in manuscript preparation and publication support, focusing on data visualization and statistical analysis results. This position offers a competitive salary range of $78,000 - $85,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package that emphasizes work-life balance and continuous learning opportunities.

Responsibilities
• Perform statistical and bioinformatics analysis of high-dimensional omics, imaging, and phenotypic data.

• Assist Dr. Vivek in conducting original research by adhering to best practices in data analysis.

• Wrangle, clean, structure, and store large datasets efficiently.
,
• Help build and maintain a searchable system for storing raw omics and imaging data.
,
• Implement scalable, high-performance workflows to support the research community.
,
• Provide detailed documentation and user support for computational researchers.
,
• Collaborate with investigators to clarify requests and document requirements.
,
• Assist in manuscript preparation, focusing on data visualization and statistical analysis results.

Requirements
• Master's degree in Computational Biology, Data Science, Biostatistics, Public Health or a related field and two years of experience, or a BS/BA in a related field and four years of experience.

• Demonstrated skills in a high-level programming language, preferably SAS, R, or Python.

• Basic understanding of statistics and its applications to biomedical science.

• Experience with structured data storage and multi-component data processing systems.

• Experience with architecture or tools for managing omics or imaging data.

• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively.
,
• Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills, both written and verbal.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Nice-to-haves
• Demonstrated ability in research related to genomic analysis, machine learning, or image analysis.

• Experience with next-generation sequencing such as RNA-seq and Whole genome sequencing.

• Experience with microarray-based DNA methylation profiling and multiplexed proteomics platform.
