Community Engineer

PlanetScale is growing rapidly and reinventing the database space. The PlanetScale platform offers both Postgres and Vitess databases. Vitess, an open-source database clustering system for horizontal scaling of MySQL, enables businesses to efficiently handle large-scale data workloads — without sacrificing developer experience. We're looking for a Community Engineer to build, nurture, and maintain a welcoming technical community around PlanetScale's database platform. In this role, you'll be the voice of our developer community, engaging directly with engineers building on PlanetScale, answering technical questions, and creating educational content that empowers developers to build better with MySQL, Vitess, and Postgres. What's the job to be done? Community Engagement • Be present and active in our community spaces including Discord, Reddit, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other platforms where our users gather • Answer technical questions about databases, MySQL/Vitess, Postgres, and PlanetScale products • Participate in broader database and engineering communities where PlanetScale users are active • Monitor conversations across platforms to identify trends, common questions, and opportunities for educational content Content Creation • Create educational developer content based on real conversations and questions you're seeing in the field • Develop content in multiple formats: written tutorials and guides, video demonstrations, livestreams, conference talks, and meetup presentations • Translate complex database concepts into accessible, practical content that serves developers of all skill levels • Build beginner and intermediate-level code examples and demonstrations Community Programs • Identify and support community champions and power users • Collaborate with product engineering teams to gather and deliver community feedback • Represent PlanetScale at conferences, meetups, and community events (some travel required) These attributes best describe you • Warm, empathetic, and personable in all interactions. Total Compensation and Pay Transparency An employee's total compensation consists of base salary + benefits + equity.
