Co-teach and Evaluate Foundational Skills for Nurse Educators Course

Description The Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU) is a private institution in Eswatini with three faculties: Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Theology. The Faculty of Health Sciences (FOHS) currently offers four programs, including bachelor’s degrees in 1) nursing and midwifery (BSNM), 2) nursing anesthesia, 3) medical laboratory science, and 4) a diploma in pharmacy. In February 2025, the Faculty of Health Sciences started offering a Master of Science in Nursing program. Nursing education at SANU lags due to outdated curricula, limited educator training, and evolving health needs. Thus, Southern Africa Nazarene University is seeking the support of one Virtual Service Pilot Participant (VSPP) to co-review and co-teach and evaluate a “Foundational Skills for Nurse Educators” course. The VSPP would co-teach and evaluate students and support capacity strengthening for faculty. The university anticipates admitting 20 students who will attend one weekly session. The course aims to introduce learners to nursing education concepts, the role of faculty members, and various other aspects of nursing education. The course includes content in educational philosophy and theories, educational psychology, legal and ethical issues in nursing education, and simulation and information technology. With the support of the VSPP, the faculty will gain new skills and experience in curriculum development processes and procedures. The organization has previously collaborated with the Peace Corps. They understand that the role of a VSPP is very different than a Peace Corps Volunteer or Peace Corps Response Volunteer. Southern Africa Nazarene University’s (SANU) has strong ties to health care education through its Faculty of Health Science. They offer courses in nursing, midwifery, medical lab science, pharmacy, etc. Virtual Service Engagement and Tasks The VSPP will engage in the following tasks, in collaboration with their host country partners: • Review existing curriculum and determine areas for course and content enrichment • Co-teach a “Foundational Skills for Nurse Educators” course under the Master of Science in Nursing program • Refine assessment tools used to evaluate student knowledge for the course and for future programs • Provide feedback on course management and organization VSPPs are expected to engage on the tasks listed above for an estimated 5–15 hours per week. This engagement is estimated to be 10 hours per week. Online collaboration will generally occur between 8:00 a.m.– 5:00 p.m. Eswatini time (SAST). Specific times will be determined during orientation. The host country counterpart will have access to Zoom, WhatsApp, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams for regular communication and collaboration. Per the Child Protection Code of Conduct, when engaging online with minors (0–18), two adults must be present.
