Career Advising Intern for Government, Policy, International Affairs, and Law (Grad Students Preferred)

Department Overview: SuccessWorks at the College of Letters & Science is responsible for providing career advising and internship/job search assistance to over 18,000 undergraduates studying one or more of over 70 majors and certificates housed within the College of Letters & Science. Among our many services, we offer career, internship, and grad school advising, programming and events, undergraduate career courses, and growing connections to UW’s vast alumni network and employers. Anticipated Start Date: ASAP Anticipated End Date (If Applicable): May 2026, continuing students are eligible to return to the position Remote Work Eligibility Detail: Not Remote Anticipated Hours Per Week: 10-15 Schedule: This role supports career services events and programs based on your availability, establishing a consistent schedule with flexibility to work around other academic program commitments. Weekly schedules typically occur during standard work hours (Mondays - Fridays between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm) with occasional opportunities for evening and weekend work supporting career programs and events. Availability during peak advising hours (weekdays 10am-2pm) is preferred. Job duties will mainly be on-site. Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum: $17.00 Number of Positions: 1 Qualifications: -Enrolled student for the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters (Graduate Students Preferred) -Able to commit to a regular weekly schedule with availability within office hours and the ability to occasionally work after hours for in-person classroom presentations, workshops, or events Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: -Commitment to creating advising environments that support students from all identities and backgrounds -Experience building supportive relationships through interpersonal communication, active listening, and rapport building -Willingness to learn, ask questions and seek information & resources to gain clarity and understanding -Capacity to manage priorities and meet deadlines -Ability to communicate needs and preferences, self-reflect, and grow from feedback -Able to work with others to accomplish goals and tasks -Able to articulate a connection between this role and skills and/or experience related to future goals SuccessWorks supports students' job, internship, and grad school interests through 8 Career Communities. Graduate students perusing a JD, MPA, MSW, or other relevant degree are preferred. Position Summary/Job Duties: -Meet with L&S students on an individual basis for pre-scheduled 30 minute appointments to assist with resume/cover letter feedback, interviewing, and job/internship search strategies; document student appointments in Advisor Notes System -Present workshops on a variety of career topics, both within and outside the classroom to a wide variety of student audiences -Provide support to career communities based on career community needs (examples include newsletter support, advising, and projects) -Engage in project work based on SuccessWorks needs and intern skills and interests -Assist with staffing career events and programs (examples include career fairs, campus resource fair tabling, Major at Work events, and resume review events) Physical Demands: N/A Institutional Statements: Equal Employment Opportunity Statement: UW-Madison is an Equal Employment, Equal Access Employer committed to increasing the diversity of our workforce.
