Candidate Architect (2026 Intake)

The philosophy of practice is embodied in the spirit of enquiry that flourishes amongst our staff.We are looking for "First Year Out's" to join our teams on completing their Master's of Architecture studies. SAOTA offers extensive training, diverse project experience, and a formal Mentorship Program for young architects to join and become eligible for future registration with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession.
As a FYO, you will:
Develop and be responsible for certain aspects of the project design and developmentWith assistance, liaison with External Consultants, Contractor/Site, Architects of Record as well as with the ClientBe required to stay updated on latest architecture and design trends and technologyNeed to display learning agility and initiativeContribute, or otherwise assist as required, to provide project teams with a full Architectural service covering both presentation and contractual materialInterpret and understand the design briefProduce all documentation relating to the designConsistently demonstrates the ability to respond and develop skills in all levels of project technical challengesAssist in producing all documentation relating to the design including Drawings, 3D Models, Images & all other documentation relating to the design and according to the project briefProactively seek feedback from seniors and act on technical advice givenReceive training on all SAOTA systems, standards and proceduresSupport the production and project delivery
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND CRITERIA
MArch / MTech in Architecture or equivalentWorking knowledge of REVITAble to understand and formulate design decisions and present them for discussionAble to use a variety of media and software in the development and documentation of a design projectDisplay high-level thinking in architecture and designAble to accurately understand and interpret instructionsSound understanding of the production process, including applications of different file formatsThe ability to learn and demonstrate creative problem-solving skillsAble to set and achieve deadlines and give regular updates on progressMethodical, accurate, and consistent attention to detailAble to manage sensitive and sometimes confidential informationAble to remain calm and work in pressurised environmentsSelf-motivated and able to take responsibilityDemonstrate initiative and be proactive towards daily tasksDemonstrates creative problem-solving skillsDue to the nature of the position, there will be a requirement to work additional hours as necessary, which may include weekends occasionallyEnthusiastic and positive attitude towards personal growth and development in the companyPlease note that this role is only open to Candidate Architects living in South Africa
SAOTA offers a hybrid working environment where staff can choose to work from home (not limited to Cape Town), in-studio, or do both. Our flexible working hours policy aims to accommodate staff's home life commitments while ensuring our work commitments are met. All Employees are required to have an uncapped 20Mbps (up/down) minimum Internet Connectivity line.
