APPLICANT JOB DESCRIPTION – PROGRAMMER

DEPARTMENT: Information Technology CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

Accomplishes the plans, goals and objectives established for the position; provides service to users, agents and customers; supports the continuation of the business area through output of current and newly established systems.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Programmer reports directly to the Information Technology Manager. There are no positions reporting directly to the Programmer.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

Required: High School diploma or its equivalent. Recommend AIT designation for advancement to Senior position.

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree from a four year accredited college in a computer related field, with additional training in areas relevant to the insurance and finance industry, experience with Sapiens

Licensing/Registration/Certification:

Required: Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record

Preferred: System and/or Programming Designation

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Must have strong skills and understanding of programming. Ability to accomplish goals and objectives; Possess effective people skills; Ability to keep accurate, detailed documentation.

Excellent telephone skills and manners; Excellent skills for planning and using time.

Physical:

Body positions: Sitting and standing; Ability to spend extensive time sitting while working on a keyboard.

Body movements: Must have physical dexterity to move through office.

Body senses: Must have full use of eyes, ears and speech for communication with customers and management. Must be able to see and hear, have full power of speech as well as communicate with users.

Mental Requirements:

Mathematics: Ability to understand basic math concepts. (Add, Sub, Divide, Multiple, Formulas etc.)

Language: Must be able to communicate in English. Communication must be
effective in both the verbal and written modes, interact with users. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general insurance business. Effectively present information and respond to questions from users.

Computer: Ability to program in a Windows and/or, AS 400 based environment, communicate via e-mail, and learn industry software and operating systems.

Working Conditions:

Primarily an office setting, requiring sitting extended periods of time. Occasional over-night travel to regional meetings, agency visits and training classes, requiring driving/riding company vehicles.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Duties and Tasks:

Develop and program Operating Systems. This includes, but is not limited to:
• Evaluate scope of project assigned
• Complete project within project deadline, error free
• Test the project code for functionality before releasing it to the Systems Analyst
• Document and check in source code of programming projects
• Respond to user request within 48 hours

Maintain present Operating Systems. This includes, but is not limited to:
• Assure Operating System is available to users
• Respond to user request within agreed upon time, 100%
• Implement fixes to present system

Manage projects, software and hardware

Perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by manager, verbally or in writing, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers during peak periods of business
