2025 Pathways, Discord Moderator

Remote Full-time
Girls Who Code is seeking enthusiastic Discord Moderators for our 2025 Summer Programs. During the summer, we host two programs: our synchronous Summer Immersion Program (SIP) and our asynchronous Pathways. Our curriculum is designed to educate, inspire, and equip high school girls and non-binary students with the skills and resources to pursue academics and careers in the technology and engineering sectors, as well as build bravery and confidence. Our flexible virtual programs are unique in their approach by offering students across the country to participate in a computer science class that includes community-building and career exploration opportunities. Students enrolled in our programs will learn about Game Design, Cybersecurity, Web Design, Data Science, and AI.

We believe all girls have the interest and ability to code. Our Summer Programs Discord Moderator will encourage, nurture, and support students in the Discord space and with asynchronous moments of connection through our program. They will support all students enrolled in the summer program they are supporting (around 3-5k students) by assigning students roles, posting announcements and discussion starters, co-facilitating Community Events, and moderating student contributions in the GWC Discord servers over the course of the programs. The Discord Moderator is also encouraged to participate in the conversations and make connections with our GWC community!

Applicants must be a rising senior in college (or equivalent level of experience) or graduate at the start of the program and must be able to commit to the program schedule below.
Responsibilities
• Attend Discord Moderator pre-training in early June and co-facilitate the Discord training session for your program.
• Support student onboarding to the GWC Discord server by manually verifying usernames and assigning student roles (most of this work will take place in the days leading up to the program launch and the first few days of the program).
• Set and maintain clear working hours, especially during the week before program launch and week 1 of the program when this work is most crucial (see program schedules above).
• Moderate and ensure a GWC Discord server with ~3-5k high school students members is a safe and productive place for all members to participate by implementing moderation practices and norms established in the GWC-provided Moderator Toolkit. The Moderator will escalate these incidents to GWC Central for the final decision.
• Support community building in the Discord server by posting engaging questions, updates, and responding to questions and student posts.
• Communicate regularly and meet with your manager weekly to review feedback, share server notes/observations, and plan for next steps.
• Collaborate with other Discord Moderators and teaching staff in the server channels and reach out to troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
• Act as a representative of Girls Who Code in Discord. Always act with maturity and appropriate discretion when interacting with students, other teaching staff, family members/guardians, and partner contacts.
• Understand and follow all escalation procedures for any student issues that arise in the server during the program.
• Provide feedback and suggest solutions to problems or challenges that may arise for students or teaching staff as they relate to Discord during the program.
• Co-facilitate Discord Community Events throughout the program.
• Assist with data collection at the end of the program to inform future iterations.
Qualifications
• Must be at least a rising senior in college (or equivalent level of experience) at the start of the program.
• Must be able to commit to working up to 20 hours per week during each week of the program and be able to attend virtual training prior to the program's start date. Moderators are paid for all training and prep time.
• Passion for building a supportive online community for young people.
• Prior experience moderating online communities (Discord, Twitch, etc.) or comparable, transferable experience.
• Experience and comfort with using Discord features and functionality.
• Must be coachable and model a growth mindset. Moderators should be willing to provide, accept, and implement feedback about their performance in order to better serve the needs of students in the program.
• Strong time management, organizational, and communication skills.
• Believe that all girls can code!
Preferred Qualifications
• Prior experience with Girls Who Code programs.
• Experience with at least one programming language. Our curriculum teaches Computer Science concepts with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python. While you will not be delivering lessons, you may be able to support teaching staff by answering student questions.
• Previous teaching, tutoring or mentoring experience, especially in computer science is strongly preferred.
• Experience facilitating and discussing various computer science topics.
• Experience within academically and culturally diverse classroom communities.
